問題多數唔係你冇天分，而係你跟錯咗人。喺香港，私人消遣性質嘅畫班幾乎冇強制專業牌照——人人都可以自稱畫畫老師；普通人又好似唔識分邊個理髮師傅、邊碗雲吞麵先係真高手一樣，難分邊個真係識教。於是多數人只好睇門面裝修靚唔靚、導師外表「夠唔夠似老師」、或者覺得「消遣班應該平」就報名，結果學費同學到嘅嘢往往唔成正比。出面好多導師其實只係三種情況：懶得進修、只識自己一招；班額太大趕堂，根本冇時間教明白你；又或者自己都未搞清楚，只靠網上有名氣或者一張證書嚟吸引人。上堂淨係叫你「跟感覺」「多練習」「學多十年就會」——因為佢哋交唔出一套有條理、你返屋企都用得着嘅創作方法。你要嘅，係真有學問、日日創作嘅藝術家——有策展人同收藏家嘅頭腦，肯教到你最終可以自己做得掂、唔使再靠老師：Michael Andrew Law 羅卓睿。The problem usually isn't talent—it's the wrong teacher. Private hobby-style art classes in Hong Kong need almost no mandatory professional licence, so anyone can call themselves a teacher, while most people can't judge quality any more than they can judge a master barber. Buyers pick by storefront, whether the tutor looks like a teacher, or hobby should be cheap, and tuition often fails to match results. Many tutors won't deepen their craft and only know one trick; pack cheap rushed classes; or attract students with online fame or a certificate while still unclear themselves. Class becomes follow your feeling and practise more. What you want is a real, knowledgeable artist—with a curator's and a collector's mind—who leads you until you can create without needing a teacher: Michael Andrew Law.

絕大部份畫班老師知識貧乏，
只懂一種藝術風格Most local art-class teachers are knowledge-poor — they only know one art style
好多本地畫班老師只識一種畫法、一種工具——因為佢哋從來冇一套可以帶走、換題材都用得着嘅創作方法，只有自己慣用嗰招。真正識教嘅老師，會交一套有歷史底蘊、講得清邏輯嘅方法俾你：技術唔使再靠碰運氣（畫靚定畫醜靠撞彩），你個腦先有位去做性格、品味同表達——就好似厲害嘅廚師唔使再驚牛排煎過龍，鋼琴家唔使再驚撳錯鍵。只教自己嗰一招、去到邊都淨係嗰招，只能複製老師自己；你想畫寫實、想抽象、想混用唔同材料，佢哋就冇貨。試堂你可以問：換第二種材料，你教嘅方法仲用唔用得着？我畫唔到落去、卡住嗰陣，你點知我邊一步做對咗？如果答唔出，你學緊嘅只係跟住抄，唔係建立自己嘅藝術語言。Many local tutors know one method and one tool—they never built a takeaway creative method that still works when the subject changes, only their pet trick. A real teacher hands you historically grounded logic so technique is not luck, and your mind is free for character, taste and expression. Teaching only one trick everywhere clones the teacher; ask for realism, abstraction or mixed materials and they're empty. In a trial, ask: does your method still work with another material? When I'm stuck, how do you know which step I got right? If they can't answer, you're only copying—not building your own artistic language.

絕大部份畫班老師不想、也不懂
深造自己的藝術知識Most local art-class teachers neither want to, nor know how to, deepen their own art knowledge
唔做研究、唔肯進修——自己冇科學同邏輯底子，就只能叫你「放膽試」「跟感覺走」。結果你學十年，功力同十年前差唔多：連基本步驟都未清就亂畫，畫到一半、點改都唔滿意嘅畫堆滿屋。呢種係唔識嘅人帶唔識嘅人：老師自己都靠手順同運氣（自己都講唔清點解靚），點教你？前人用幾百年煉出嚟嘅方法明明存在，你明明俾咗學費，卻要自己由零慢慢摸、慢慢撞板——因為嗰位老師交唔出方法，自己都唔識進修。仲有啲人靠一張證書或者網上有名氣，代替真本事。你可以問：你點避免學生十年後仍然喺同一級錯誤打轉？如果答案只有「多練」，即係冇診斷、冇改錯步驟，只係叫你重複失敗。Skip research, refuse to deepen—and with no foundation they only say just try and follow your feeling. Ten years later you're near where you started: basics unclear, half-finished paintings piling up. That's the blind leading the blind: if the teacher relies on hand-feel and luck and can't explain why something works, how can they teach you? Centuries of refined methods exist, yet you pay tuition and still guess from zero. Some swap a certificate or online fame for real teaching. Ask: how do you stop students repeating the same beginner errors for a decade? If the answer is only practise more, there is no diagnosis—only repeating failure.

唔當專業Most local art-class teachers treat art as a hobby, not a profession
好多畫班把藝術當消遣：你畫唔到落去、卡住嗰陣，佢哋淨係識動手喺你幅畫度改幾筆（幫你執靚），或者叫你「返去多練習」「學耐啲就會」。堂上改完嗰刻你以為解決咗，返到屋企依然畫唔出——賣緊「暫時靚咗」嘅感覺，唔係教你識。另一種常見情況係班太平、人太多、趕堂：每人得幾分鐘，最快收尾就係老師代你落筆改畫；宣傳冊好靚，真正上堂却係另一個幫手，唔係你以為嗰位導師。如果一位老師連用說話都講唔清解決方法，淨係識動手改你幅畫，佢係畫畫佬，唔係老師。認真嘅純藝術學習，永遠一半係科學、一半係情感：科學方法未掌握，情感永遠釋放唔到，你就永遠停喺消遣層次。你可以問：如果唔俾你碰我幅畫，你仲教唔教得成？請講我返到屋企要點練習——唔係一句「畫多幾幅」就算。Many studios treat art as pastime: when you're stuck they only paint a few strokes on your work to make it look better, or say practise more. It feels solved in class; at home you still can't—selling a temporary look, not learning. Another common pattern is cheap packed classes: minutes per student, the teacher painting over your work to finish, or a different helper than the brochure. If they can't explain a solution in words and can only alter your canvas, they're a painter, not a teacher. Serious fine-art learning is half science, half emotion: without the method, emotion never fully releases and you stay at pastime level. Ask: can you teach me without touching my painting? What exactly should I practise at home—not just make more pictures?

You want a real, knowledgeable artist who creates every day—with a curator's eye for how work is organised and read in today's art world, and a collector's mind for whether it still stands after leaving the studio. A great teacher doesn't keep painting over your work forever; they lead you until you can explain and do it yourself. Start with three checks: a method that works, or luck and hand-feel? Step-by-step rescue, or step back and feel? A take-home solution, or a few strokes on your canvas and practise more? Local hobby classes usually fail all three. Michael Andrew Law is a practising contemporary artist, oil painter, published writer and art collector who designs the curriculum—making and researching daily. You want real craft: materials, control, and judgment that masters method before emotion. Hobby is a use-case, not a reason to underprice teaching: too cheap often means rushed packed classes. Hobby teachers who only paint over your work leave portfolios collapsing. You need a practising artist with a real method: a connected body of work, unblock stuck points, judgment you can reproduce at home. DSE VA, portfolio, mentoring and agents are professional paths—not a hobby-class upgrade pack.

We describe common failure patterns (won't deepen, rushed classes, looking like a teacher without substance), not every local studio; good hobby teaching can exist, yet low barriers make weak teaching common. We help each student—especially those who already tried local classes—do their best. We do not replace official exam or institution information.
